Well, I decided to replace the standing rigging on my 85 H-31 (it's original!). In talking with the rigger, he warned me that the spreader tips on the B&R mast can be a problem and may need to be replaced. I called Rig Rite and they told me the parts were in stock and $129 each (ouch, need 4 of them). So I asked the rigger to try and salvage the existing ones, but in the end he couldn't. So back to Rig Rite, order the 4 parts, pay for 2 day shipping. Two days later, no parts. Call Rig Rite. Oh, the order won't ship until next week. I ask, "early next week?", they say "yes". Called Monday, leave a message, we'll get back to you. No call. Called today (Tues), "Oh, the parts are in machining, they'll ship Friday, oh and the price is now $149 each." In the meantime, the lay charges continue to add up at the yard! Now that I'm done venting, does anyone know of another supplier of parts for the B&R rig? If I have a choice, I'll never deal with Rig Rite again! - Richard s/v Discovery San Francisco

I Did the Same,

Last Summer I pulled my mast and had to replace the boots, also. If they are the same kind, you may just have to flip them over and you are OK. But I couldn't and a guy in Fall River, MA makes them up. They are a unique part, but cost about $30 apiece. A far cry from Rig Rite that is also in my neck of the woods! In necessary, contact me thru the Owner's forum.

What's the problem with the tips?

Richard, I'm curious, what sort of problems develop with the tips on the B&R rig? Manny P.S. It may not hurt to give the folks at Rigging Only a call, they may be able to offer advice.

The tips are cast aluminum with a SS pin that holds the shrouds. After 25 years in salt air, it's pretty much impossible to get the pin out. The rigger tried putting the tip on a press, but the casting just crumbled... - Richard

Pin Removal

My pins were frozen too, so I drilled them out. I just kept progressively using larger drill bits and when the remainder of the pin was thin enough I used a punch to collapse them. I replaced the pin with a 1/2" shoulder bolt and screwed an acorn nut on to keep it in place with some Loctite (no more cotter pins). The smooth surface of the acorn nut prevents chafing of the jib if it contacts the spreaders. This way I figure I can get a wrench on the bolt to break it loose next time. I did not tape or put boots on the spreader ends. I think boots and tape allows junk to become trapped inside promoting the kind of corrosion we experienced. Allan
