Has anyone out there ever heard that Awlcraft 2000 REQUIRES clear coat in order to be buffable and repairable? This is something that I had heard had come from an awlgrip support tech. Any truth to this???

Clear coats are usually used on very dark finishes, like black or flag blue. But, not so necessary on most colors. And, the Awlcraft color without clear coats are repairable. The original Awlgrip coatings were very hard, very abrasion resistant, have great color retention, etc., but are so hard that they are difficult to repair unless the application is only a few days old (which is good for taking care of orange peel finishes, or sags or runs). Awlcraft is much softer paint and is good stuff, but not quite as good as the original. But, being able to repair it is sometimes more important to most boat owners. They are also more VOC compliant than the original.

Well I clarified this matter with my paint guy. He states that this applies to the paints with metallic. Which we are doing a dark blue metallic Awlcraft job.
