Hi VEGAtarians:

Great to see the photo's of the Rendezvous this year...Perhaps Peter
will agree to be the official recorder of some of the West Coast
activities in the future. I believe Fishermans' Bay in the San Juans
is the destination next year. Diana and I are already getting our new
Canadian Citizen Passes and Canpass to ensure that we do not have any
difficulty. We plan to sail in the San Juans during our holiday next
summer. One of the issues is the current dumping laws in the US as
well as the new very strict laws being considered in Canada. I am
considering a composting toilet - the Airhead - rather than the usual
holding tank...Anyone have any comments / experience with this type
of product on a boat?

Thanks

I was on a boat with a composting toilet on the HAHA
and I can't recommend them. Initially it seemed to
work well but then the whole thing became a huge
bucket of muck. I think what happened was the
following: The first week we had winds on our nose so
we didn't put sail up. When we finally were able to
do some sailing, the boat was heeled over which led to
urine getting into the feces receptacle where it isn;t
supposed to be. IT's a pity because in the begining
it worked better than any other marine toilet I've
seen.
Is Canada considering laws regarding waste discharge
simuliar to U.S.'s? What a pity if they are. When I
was in the Gulf Islands some years back it was
certainly easier.

I've been thinking about one of the higher volume PortaPottys that
have a 1 1/2" pumpout access that could be plumbed with a manual
waste pump to the seacock. Any comments?

I'm hoping to be a first-timer at the rendezvous next summer at
Fishermans' Bay.

Hi Austin...I have done some more research into the airhead and
contrary to a previous opinon, an individual who lives aboard an
Alberg 30 says that it works fine and is a great alternative to a
holding tank. I purchased a porta potti that meets USG standards and
allows overboard discharge as well. The trouble is there are fewer
places to discharge waste and proposed Canadian regulations are
getting even tighter than US....

Hey Stacey,

Thanks for the comments.

Just curious which brand of composting toilet it was? Airhead? In
general, if the boat is on a tack that leans the toilet back and the
toilet is used, that could cause liquids to get into the solids
tank. If that happens just add more peat and things should be back
to normal in 2-3 days.

Cheers,
Greg
