AVA East Coast Rendezvous (Chesapeake Bay)

For you Easterners who have been ignoring the Rendezvous discussion by
the North West VEGAtarians and may have missed this; Fred Hunt, of the
Albin Cruisers has been helping me get organized. We are discussing
holding the Chesapeake Bay Rendezvous either at Inner Harbor or Fells
Point in Baltimore due to the geographic concentration of AVA Members
in the area and the convenience for those that may not be able to
bring their boats.

How many of you would NOT come to a Vega Rendezvous held at Inner
Harbor or Fells Point because of the location?. Do you have a better
suggestion that would work for the maximum number of members?

It would be nice to hear some input concerning attendance. How many of
you will plan to attend the First Ever in Recent Memory Chesapeake Bay
(VODCA?) Rendezvous either with or without your boat?

Date: One that will not conflict with the NW VEGAtarians(tm)
Rendezvous (Only because Laura and I want to be there) How about the
third weekend in July?

Mahalo nui loa to the Albin Cruisers, Gordon, Tim, Fred and all of the
members, for lending your experience, assistance, and, as we say in
Hawaii, "Kokua" on this.

Anyone?

Actually, the third weekend in July is out for me because of business
committments. I know its cold back there right now but try to
visualize clear skies and balmy winds (Cold beer, fresh seafood and
new people to try your tall tales on)

The North West VEGAtarians have chosen the first weekend in September
at Otter Bay. I am suggesting either Fells Point or Baltimore's Inner
Harbor for the Chesapeake event. Need those of you who live in the
area to speak up and let me know which you prefer and which summer
weekend will work for the most of you. We also need some kind of
indication that there is enough interest to justify holding the event.
No point in doing it if no one is going to show up.

As one of the Chesapeake Bay Vegetarians, I am not so fond of a meeting in
Baltimore. It would be much more fun if a lot of us could SAIL to the meeting, and
Baltimore is just a tad too far for those of us in the South Bay ("Hampton Road" and
environs), especially with a tight vacation budget (and not well equipped nor
experienced to sail for 2-3 days 24 hours straight).
Also, I agree that starting after July 4th (and up to Labor Day), sailing on the
Chesapeake bay is NOT much fun - either it's hot, humid, and little wind, or you have
thunderstorms.
I would have proposed a meeting in Willoughby Bay (Norfolk), except my health (and
too many other commitments) won't allow me to put enough time in to organize it. I
know of at least 4 other Vega's in the immediate vicinity, plus a "southern" meeting
point would maybe allow some people to sail up from North Carolina (Innercoastal
Waterway). Willoughby Bay is nice because it's relatively sheltered, there are plenty of
anchorages, and several marinas (with pump-outs, transient slips, and fuel). There is
a seafood restaurant (not too fancy) and a cheap motel (at least it LOOKS cheap).
Anyway, just a suggestion, but as I said, I can't take the lead organizing it. So if y'all
decide on the Northern Bay, I'll have to either sit it out this year or come by car.

Sebastian thank you very much. As I have repeatedly said, I do not know the area so, if I must do the organizing, I have to rely on people like you for advice. Unfortunately, the input from Vega owners in the area has been almost nil. The idea of Baltimore or Fells Point was put forward by the Albin Cruisers who have experience with holding rendezvous in the Chesapeake.

With nothing else to go on and almost no response by anyone that might plan to attend, I have been trying to decide whether to move forward with it. I must have a firm committment from at minimum six to eight boats to justify the considerable expense that I will incur to be there. Holding the event in mid June would allow me to combine it with another trip and mitigate the burden somewhat but I simply MUST have firm committments from some of the Vega owners in the area, and soon.

Thanks again for speaking up

how about Saint Marys river Maryland? just off the mouth of the potomac.
Very Very large anchorage, with plenty of elbow room. not much comercial
development there, but should be central for everyone.

I'm afraid this is alittle late, just been too busy to spend quality
time with my computer! I keep my Vega in Willoughby Bay (Norfolk),
and know of 2 others within 1000 yards. We should get together when
the weather breaks, even if it is for a day or weekend sail. I plan
to haul soon to paint, before I get the ugly boat award, but should
be back @ Rebel in time for the thaw. Let me know!!
