I recently purchased a 1976 Catalina 27. It has a 5hp Nissan outboard on it. I think Catalina recommended a 9hp. Will this cause me underpowered problems?

Yes, of course

do you sail where there is a current? I would get the 9.9 when you can afford it.

More is better.

I had a 270 that had Yanmar 18hp (inboard). 9 HP to me would be the minimum, if you can swing more, I think you would be more pleased with 15 HP. As mentioned in the previous post, current and also wind could result in some tricky maneuvering moments.

More,

We used a Yamaha 9.9 4-stroke high-thrust on our C27, it had sufficient power to drive the boat at hull speed in any and all conditions, with lots in reserve. Any more hp would be waste. EG

Yamaha high thrust

I say the 5 hp would be underpowered if you have a current or wind to deal with. I would look into the Yamaha high thrust 8 or 9.9 hp engine with 25 inch shaft. My father has a 9.9 on his 30 foot 10,000 pound sailboat and only has to run 1/4 power to reach hull speed. So an 8 probally would be big enough for you.

Outboard

Not wanting to "rock the boat", I wouldn't recommend anything larger than 9.9 without someone having first hand knowledge from someone who actually HAS something larger mounted on their transom. Don't forget our catalinas don't have the most robust transoms and mounting a 9.9 is a chore to reinforce the transom but seems to be the best "middle" ground as far as having some hp in reserve for beating into wind/waves and achieving hull speed 6.25kts for C27's. I personally have a 14hp inboard (Universal M-18...no this model doesn't represent the hp). I think you would be satisfied with a 9hp model. Don't forget other factors- size, weight, budget, fuel consumption. A 15hp would cost significantly more, weigh more, and the "Catalina squat" when under power would be sigficantly more so.
