I'm looking at putting a Raytheon St4000 Plus Wheel Autopilot on my '85 C30. I'm also looking at a Garmin 180 Carograpic GPS. If anyone has thoughts on this and I would much appricate at this is more than a couple of dollars.

st4000W and Garmin 45

I installed an ST4000W last year on my C-34. Took a weekend, but biggest problem was not having enough lead for the fluxgate compass back to the pedestal. I ended up splicing in a 6 ft piece of computer cable (5 wire) I soldered all connections and did not have a problem. However, the CO board on my unit did not work. Raytheon replaced with no questions asked and although it took about a month, it has performed flawlessly since. I also hooked up the Garmin GPS 45 and put a mount on the storm rail. All in all I am very happy with the set-up, and can't wait to sail with the GPS steering with SA turned off.

4000+ and a Garmen 3

I installed a 4000 wheel on my C-36 with a Garmen 3 Hand Held. Garmen makes an interface cable and everything seems to work but I do not like the way the autopilot has to except the next waypoint in a route. If I had it to do over again, I think I would look closer at the 420, 520 or 620 chart plotters with raystar GPS. I feel the ST interfaces to ST better than does the NEMA to ST. Bob Emerald Oddysea

4000+ & Garmin 230

Todd, I've got the 230 interfaced to the 4000 and it works great.. I also had a 4000 on my last boat interfaced to the Garmin 75 and it worked very well. I find no malfunctions in the seatalk to NEMA 0183 interface. Also I just did a 24hr sail and the 4000 performed better than I planned, it does learn to not repeat repetitive movements. I was tacking every 3 to 4hrs and it was just bearly moving the wheel to make corrections after about 30 to 40 mins. You will be pleased with the setup.. Mike WD9EOU C-38 # 169
