My Ray Marine ST-4000 autopilot refuses to lock on when attempting to swing the compass. Any suggestions before I return it to them for the fourth time? Are any of the other AP systems better than Ray Marine? (32' Morgan, 12,000 lbs.)

My brother has the same unit as you with nothing but trouble I have the Simrad and it has been flawless so far.

8 yrs and still working flawless

Tom, what do you mean by lock on? Is the pilot able to hold an auto course and do a track course from gps? Do you mean the the pilot and binnacle compass don't agree?

Try moving the Compass

I had the same setup problem. The compass was too close to the iron in the battery charger. Moving the compass about 3 feet solved the problem and the unit has steered the boat well for 4 seasons.
