Does anyone have any recomendations on a Wheel Autopilot for an Oday 34. The two models I'm looking at is the Autohelm 4000SP from Raytheon and WP30CX from SimRad. Both units will meet my needs and both units come with a remote. I have friends that have the 4000 and are quite happy. I was wondering if anyone has anthing good or bad to say about either unit.

OD 34 Autopilot

Mike, I have a Raytheon ST4000 and have been been very happy with it. About 4 years old now I believe (maybe 5 - time flies...). All my other instruments are Raytheon also and everything talks on SeaTalk - you can also get it to work on NMEA. You'll want to do that so it will steer directly to waypoints - really nice on hot windless days when you're motoring. With my GPS at the nav station you can get the autopilot to display distance to waypoint, etc. Did have a failure of the control/display when it was 2 years old and Raytheon sent a new one even out of warranty at no charge. Where to mount things so they are the most useful always seems to be an issue. I mounted the control on the seat back of the cockpit bench. Port side about opposite the wheel. When you open the cockpit locker it is just a 1/2 inch aft of the locker so you can open it without the locker cover hitting the control. Easy to see from anywhere in the cockpit, easy for the helmsman to reach, not in the way regardless of where you sit when steering, etc. All the wiring is permanently installed, runs up the pedestal to the motor. Only thing to ever disconnect is the factory supplied quick connect at the motor if you want to remove the wheel. I don't have a remote and can't see that I would use it if I did. If that costs extra these days you may want to think it though. Hope that's helpful. Harlan

Simrad Wheelpilot

I have a Simrad on my O'Day 28. It is hooked into my gps and gives good service. The only problem I had was the attachement point to the wheel came loose. I took the unit appart and the bolt holding it had only a nut (not locking) so with the viberation and movement of the auto pilot this was bound to happen. Good Luck

Autopilot

I've used the Autohelm on my 34 for the past 8 years with little problem. The newer version should have even less since the compass is located below-decks. The few problems I have had (broken drive belt and a clutch) were easly fixed with overnighted parts and a little direction from Autohelm. After 8 years of frequent use...that isn't bad.

Autopilot on O-34

I installed the ST4000 on my O-30 in November. The install was very straighforward. The newer model supposedly has an improved control unit..also no external belts now. The fluxgate compass was mounted near the watertank in the starboard settee which makes it very near the center of motion and relatively low in the boat. Set up and adjustment was very simple following the directions in the installation manual. We were quite pleased that it worked the first try and performs very well.
