We are thinking about adding an autopilot for easier short/single hand sailing. I like the idea of something mounted out of the way vs. a wheel type pilot. What have you guys done and how do you feel about the overall results??? Doug

Look at Navico/Simrad units.

Doug: Look at the Navico/Simrad units. They are very easy to install and work well. With all of the complaints about the Autohelm units, I think I'd stay away from them. When they work, they seem to be OK. I guess on the other hand with as many as they sell, they would tend to have more problems.

"Out of the way"?

Not sure what that means. My Simrad WP30 unit is wheel mounted but I would not consider it "in the way". The nice thing about it is that there is no fluxgate to install or wires to run(except the 12V). You also do not get a display as with the Raytheon. The picture in the link below is all that there is. It's rated at 19000# displ. and keeps my H37C(18000#) on course in rough seas. If you mean a below decks autopilot then they are the best but very expensive.
