Anybody have any leads on Simrad/Autohelm comparisons ? I'm getting ready to buy a new autopilot, and need to make a choice. I used to have the AH1000 Raytheon, but it seems the programming in it could be better.
I just spent the afternoon letting the Autohelm 1000+ do a lot of the work. I've tried changing the programming and found settings that do work a little better but it doesn't like weather helm. If I can keep the sails trimmed fast enough it's OK. It has been explained to me that I'm expecting big boat performance from a small boat. The tiller pilots just can't react fast enough for a smaller boat. But..... if you're willing to take some power off the sails and when motoring, it's great. Ken S/V Wouff Hong
I'm satisfied with my Autohelm 1000+ in my Hunter 22. I haven't had much problem with weather helm using the 150% Jenny which is what I've been sailing with mostly this summer, the only time I've had the working jib up with with the main reefed and didn't have excessive weather helm. Judicious use of the Cunningham and traveler pretty well keep the weather helm down to 2-5lbs range on the tiller while making 5.5 kts hard on the wind. Autohelm steers well in these conditions.
