I just installed a Raymarine SmartPilot X-5 and would like to connect my Garmin 492 Chartplotter to it to utilize its data. I have read the manuals of both devices, but have had no luck getting the SmartPilot to recognize the plotter. The pilot computer can utilize both NMEA0183 and NMEA2000 data (the chartplotter uses NMEA 0183, but I have been unsuccessful in finding wiring diagrams that will allow me to correctly wire the two. I don't want to randomly hook leads together and risk damaging something. I also cannot find out what internal settings need to be made to have the Garmin send data correctly. Is anyone familiar with this set-up who can help. I am waiting for someone from tech services from Garmin to call me back, but thought it valuable to find someone who has accomplished this successfully.

Garmins carry the 0183 data on the negative power lead. On page 92 of the owners manual in the wiring diagram you'll notice a jumper between the negative power supply and negative data in on the chartplotter. Usually you must also go into the setup page of the chartplotter and make sure it is set to output 0183 and not a default Garmin data format.
See pages 68 to 70 regarding changing data output to 0183.

Thanks Ted for the reply, however after trying your suggestions I have still been unsuccessful in getting anything to show up when I go to the Data source screens and GPS data. It still doesn't see anything. Can you be more specific on the actual physical wire to wire hook-up. I am going through the NMEA input terminal and not the Seatalk backbone. I am confused on the how to connect to the "jumper" of the Garmin. I guess I should bite the bullet and call in a local installer to get it done correctly.
