Automated Radio Check

This was new to me! This weekend we used the new automated radio check available in our area (Coastal New Jersey). You call for a radio check on VHF channel 24; and an automated acknowledgement response calls back, repeating your original message and a short commercial announcement from one of the local towing companies and some advice on boating safety. Very Cool!

Sea Tow offers free radio checks on VHF 27 in Portland. I use it every time I go out.

The cool part is that they actually play back your call so you can hear the quality yourself.

Thank God for this service. In our area that is about all you hear all day long are calls for a radio check. Now if people would just start using it.

Im never one for more .gov regulations, but they really should put stickers on all new VHF's telling people not to use 16 for radio chex.
