AutoMac battery charge controller; and Vega Tonnage

Two Questions:
I purchased an AutoMac (made by Spa-Creek) way back in 85 or so. It has worked great until recently. Is anyone familiar with it? Does anyone have a schematic? The schematic is supposedly in one of those old "12 Volt Doctor " books by an author named Beyr (I believe). I know that it isn't state of the art, but it works for me. You simply have to monitor it a bit. Next question, has anyone documented a Vega? How did they rate the Gross Tonnage and Net Tonnage? Just curious.

Hi,

you can download a PDF of that book from

(and loads of other manuals)

Don't think it will help though, only reference to AutoMac is a ad.George "Vista" 1043 (still with a big hole in her bottom...)

Thanks George, I downloaded the "Alternator handbook", with no problem, but after downloading the "12 volt Doctor", I can't seem to open it. The AutoMac is actually a Manual Alternator controller, with the guts of the machine being a small potentiometer(rheostat) and a 50 amp ammeter. The author of the two manuals above, Edgar Beyn actually designed the AutoMac, and supposedly included a do-it-yourself project in the 12 Volt Doctor. I am going to attempt to download again (took a lot of time)

Ken,
Thats great news, I have been trying to download the handbook from www.motoren.ath.cx with no success (there is also an Alternator handbook one can download with no problem). I will get a FAX number to you as soon as my neighbor returns later this afternoon, otherwise my address is:

Glad you found your passport, what with border controls being what they are today , it could have turned into a horror trip at the border. Are you going to Baja? Wish I could go, it's been snowing the last three days here and I am depressed. I will NEVER get used to winter weather at these latitudes!!! Thanks for your efforts

Hi Frank,

I think you may need a newer version of Adobe Reader (freebe PDF
reader). I can read the file with ver. 6.0

Eureka!!! or rather success !! The problem was my version 4.0 of Adobe, I now have ver. 6.0 AND the handbook. Thanks again, and thanks to Ken Preston for his offer to send me the related pages. Won't be needing them now.

Frank. The commonly accepted meaning of "Eureka" is I have found it. Sounds
appropriate to me!
