I have a Bavaria 39 and am looking at autopilot options. It seems the techies all suggest a raymarine 6001 with Gyro. Has anyone installed any other brand and what was the outcome.

Raymarine 6001 was the autopilot of choice

for me after several months of consideration and research. You can learn more about why I chose the Raymarine unit by going to Sea Dragon's Web site then to “Projects”. www.sailingseadragon.com We displace approx 18,000 and the unit has served us well in winds upto 30 knots and in heavy following seas. The ability to hold a course while running with a following sea was a problem with many of the people I spoke with about their experiences and comments on the units they had on their boats. I quickly ruled out wheel units as everyone I spoke with complained about their ability to handle heavy winds and confused seas. I hope this is helpful.

Autopilot for Bavaria 34

I have just returned from 5 months cruising to North Queensland on a Bavaria 34 after having had a 6001 wheelpilot installed. The unit served my needs well even though it would struggle in a heavy following sea. A quadrant mounted unit in preference to the wheel pilot would be an advantage, but at greater cost. (It also gives you the ability to steer if the wheel cabling fails.) However, I have generally been happy with my system as installed. Good luck Bill Watson
