Can the ST4000 display XTE, course etc from the Garmin GPS without the use of a special NMEA interface box? I presume it can take waypoints from the GPS as standard?

Plus is the key word

Yes, the ST 4000 plus will communicate with a Garmin and display xte, and other gps data without any interfacing unit. I think the "plus" is the key word, earlier ST 4000 units needed the interface. In fact, the XTE screen is my favorite to leave selected on the autopilot. The base gps is used for heading, track and other information but on my paricular Garmin, the 125 / Sounder xte is only available on a couple of screens that I don't care much about... hence the reason for displaying it on the auto pilot control head. Neither the control head or full feature remote will pick up the depth from the Garmin gps/sounder combo but it will do track feature from gps data just fine. There were a couple of times shortly after interfacing for track navigation that I questioned if the pilot was working properly... but it finally sank into my thick skull that my boat has a lot of leeway in a strong wind and the track feature was choosing a course with a significant heading difference to keep the boat on the rhumb line.

Arlyn - you use GSD20?

Are you using a standard thru-hull transducer? (I'd like to shoot-through without a hole for the moment). There are so many - not sure which to use..

Garmin 125

I have a Garmin 125 gps / sounder with an in hull transducer. I think shoot thru the hull however is every bit as good and saves making a hole in the boat.

Arlyn -Which Settings Do You Use

On each of the units? I've tried halfheartedly to get mine to talk to each other but haven't found the right combination yet.

setttings

When loading data to the gps from the laptop or a handheld gps, Garmin to Garmin. For the Gps to communicate with the pilot, NMEA to NMEA. If your sure about your settings, and still no communication... then I'd double check the wiring. An often made mistake in the wiring is running the autopilot data - (minus)wire to ground at the autopilot along with the dc ground. That will often not work. The data - wire should be run to the gps just as the data + wire is. It should be connected to the ground wire of the gps as the Garmins have no seperate data - or ground. I know, this seems counter intuitive. That grounding each at their respective units should work. I can't explain why it doesn't...but it very often doesn't. I don't know if a ground loop occurs or a corrupt data path because of noise on the dc bus or why... all I can say is that it didn't for me, and the advice has helped several others get theirs communicating. Good luck and btw, here is a link to my connections if they can be of any help.
