I recently became the proud daddy of an '83 Hunter 34 (cigars for all). I owned and sailed a Catalina 27 for 9 years before that - saying goodbye to her wasn't easy, but moving up was long overdo. Many thanks to those whose postings on this site made me a smarter buyer. I had a good knowledge base of the boat, so I knew what to look for. My surveyor knew the model well, and gave me the warm and fuzzy I needed to close the deal. Enough sucking up. I'm looking for guidance on where to (and/or not to) mount the the Control Head (surface mount) and the Fluxgate Compass of my still-in-the box (I love new stuff) Autohelm 4000. I know there's probably something in the archives somewhere, but this serves the purpose of introducing myself as well. Thanks in advance, Dave Perry S/V (no name yet)

I did it.

Dave, I have a H34(1986) on which I installed the ST4000. It works great. Not sure I put everything in the greatest place but it all works and is convenient. I put the control box on the Stbd side on the vertical area between the cockpit forward comparment and stern storage compartment. I can lean over from the wheel and reach it. I put the compass unit in the stern compartment near the stbd side on the small bulkhead separating it from compartment containing the fuel tank. Let me know if you have other questions. Good luck with your boat. I sure enjoy mine. Bob

Autohelm

Hi, I installed my 4000 last spring, I used the same location for the touch pad as Bob did, but I hid the fluxgate compass behind the cushion, next to the mast support, near the centerline. I ran the wires from the motor, down inside the pedestal guard, and under the Steering gear cover, into the Stb locker to the touchpad. My installation also works great. Mine's under the galley

Hi Dave, Mine was istalled by the previous owner. The control head is in the same place as the other guys, but the compass is under the galley sink, on the centerline just under one of the chart tubes. It works great also. Wiring runs under the stove compartment, then into the starboard locker to the control head. Good luck with the new boat...I love mine! (bought last Oct) Joe
