Hi Ed, Measure 10 times and drill once! The instructions indicate perpindicular axis to the tiller amidships and the same plane as the horizonal axis of the tiller's throw. Don't compromise! Also, a good size backing plate where you mount the shipboard end of the tillerpilot. Sealant of all thru deck fittings is fundamental and something that I'm sure you'll pay close attention to! There's no better gift, to give a skipper, than a autopilot. You can go sailing with anyone without fear of putting too much pressure on a guest!
