I've just snapped the drive belt that goes around the helm and the autohelm drive mechanism. The replacement belt is not large enough to pass over the wheel itself and therefore the wheel must be removed. I have not been able to remove the wheel and wonder if anyone has successfully accomplished this. Any useful advice is welcomed.

Is it Edson?

The Edson wheel comes off of my H37C quite easily. I use a rag and a large Crescent wrench on the nut that is right against the wheel hub. The shaft is keyed and over two inches long so it may be bound up. Lightly tapping with a hammer and a piece of 2x4 should loosen it. Mine simply pulls straight off with a bit of wiggling. Use some 3and1 when you reinstall. Ed (eschenck@ezo.net)

Wheel removal

The wheel on our boat comes off easily. We take it off when we leave the boat and stow it below (a cheap answer to the club) and when we are on the boat at a dock or anchorage. It makes for a lot more room in the cockpit. Once you take the wheel off and lube the shaft it should remove much easy in the future. Frank Ireton *Stagazer
