I have an old Autohelm 4000. The control unit works fine but the drive unit has disintegrated. Is a drive unit for a Raymarine ST 4000 compatible with the control unit for the Autohelm 4000?

try the raymarine website. I recall seeing the individual parts available for most AP

Thanks but they don't sell any parts for the Autohelm anymore. I don't think they even sell the ST 4000 parts either. They've gone to EV-100 which requires a chartplotter GPS. I have a handheld Garmin which might work but the connecting cables will cost. I was happy with the old Autohelm although it's not nearly as sophisticated but if I could get a new drive unit for 1/4 the price I'd sure rather do that.

I don't think they've changed the drive unit since Noah installed the first one when he upgraded to wheel steering. It seems the AH4000 has the control head, computer, and flux compass all in one unit, but the connection to the drive is just two leads, correct? The new connection to the drive motor is a two pin plug with a twist lock. If this is what your drive has than it is probably a drop in fix. If not, you might have to get a new power cable for the new drive. Other than that I can't see any issues with getting a newer drive unit.

Thanks. That's good news that they haven't changed the drive unit. I'll check the plug.

Should be fine.. if the new one has a higher current draw, though, ya may have to put relays in to handle the higher current without damaging the drive motor power switches in the control head.

Rob,
Last June we replaced a broken Autohelm 4000 wheel drive unit with the latest Raymarine EV100 wheel drive, and still controlled by the 4000 head unit. It's a direct replacement, and it has functioned fine the limited times we used it. Only issue for us is that it is now not rated for our size boat.

That old Raymarine brand is no longer supported other than pdf documentation, per the Raymarine dealer.:banghead:
My boat has Autohelm® speed, depth, wind and Raymarine ST6000 AP on the old SeaTalk. So a mix is ok if you follow the installed diagrams.
Raymarine still sells the ST60 series, but not for long.
SeaTalk to SeaTalk(ng) converters are still not perfect.
So...
Mix now is ok, but you may have "advanced functions" of your AP stripped away slowly, i.e.. Route auto tracking.

Should be fine.. if the new one has a higher current draw, though, ya may have to put relays in to handle the higher current without damaging the drive motor power switches in the control head.
Right on target! Double check the wire sizes and fuses for higher amps.
Jim...

Robspratt,

I bought an ST 4000 drive unit here. Their website is not too helpful, but a phone call will likely get you what you need. I walk through there for fun on occasion. Some of the stuff they have go back to when Noah parted out the ark. If you want to PM me I can go by and look for you.
