Bad news: Depth meter read "00" yesterday and I was still floating. Checked connections at meter and knotmeter pulling the plugs and then reconnecting. Checked transducer (on the inside of the boat) to see if there was anything unusual. Nothing. Meter will still provide offset, minimum and maximum alarm settings. Meter also shows a series of pulsating flashing for the word "feet" following the "00" So any guesses whether its a bad meter, or a bad transducer? I'll be checking with Autohelm tomorrow, but wondered if anyone had some quick thoughts?

check the manual it has a troubleshooting page that has this exact problem I don't have mine at home or I would have checked for you. Double check all your connections!

Check the depth manually
On my '27 the boat still floats at 00. I set if for a 4 ft offset. The transducer is below the waterline so 00 is not really 00. Something to check anyway.

I'm familiar with Autohelm ST30, 40, 60 & 80...is it one of these? I'm not familiar with older models. If it is an ST60, the transducer will also drive the ST40 and 30 I believe. So if you could borrow one of those you could at least check if it is the display side before you start with the transducer. We recently had a new wind instrument (ST60) fail and it was the instrument head that was the problem. Our dealer replaced both but things didn't start to work until we put the new head on. You are too far away from me for it to work, but I have an ST30 Depth head....maybe someone closer has one also, or would take theirs out for a few minutes and let you plug in your wires. I'm not very knowledgeable about the Autohelm line, but I can't resist asking the simplest question- Is the meter/transducer set to read more than, say, 60 feet? I know that some depth meters have a setting that increases accuracy by changing the type of wave the transducer sends out, based on the maximum depth of the water. Is your guage set to make this change automagically, or is it manually set to the 'shallow' setting? Now Jon <grin> Meter was the problem
Thanks to all who provided advice. Switched meters with a friends and found it was in the meter, not the depth transducer. That is somewhat of a relief as pulling the transducer meant arguing with 5200. And Jon, the meter routinely would read up to 200 feet in our lake. <grin> But the following might be helpful: all the meter functions worked on the depth meter except for the depth. "Feet" flashed which according to the manual indicated a problem with the connection to the depth transducer. That still could be true, but apparently it is inside the meter head.
