I have a major problem on my autohelm 4000 auto pilot and I am looking for advice on the fix. The problem is that the two plastic posts that hold the gimbal for the magnetic compass have failed (cracked). I sent the unit to Raytheon who informed me that my brand of autopilot (vintage) stopped being sold about 4 years ago and that no parts were available. They tried to super glue the cracked posts but they failed in the return shipment. Their soloution of course is to purchase a new 4000. Given their position on parts, I doubt it will be with them. I am considering building new posts out of epoxy. Any thoughts or suggestions here? They can't be metal posts as it will effect the magnetic compass. Anyone with a simular problem?

Autohelm 4000 Advise Response

Rob, You indicated a plastic post on your Autohelm 4000 has broken and cannot be fixed. You may wish to try to have the part fabricated out of aluminum in a machine shop. Try the yellow pages for a start. Good Luck! Lamar, Little Torch Key, Florida

autohelm problems

My advice is to stay away from these low end autopillots from raytheon. I have an st4000 wheel pilot and the more I know about it the less I like it. (see my post in the big boat forum under autopilot) I would think that you could use a non ferrous metal to replace the plastic crap that paytheon uses. If not what about replacing just the compass can't you update just that part or has raytheon made that impossible as well? My experience with raytheon is that it's worht a second or third call. Sometimes you finally end up with someone who knows what they're talking about and is willing to help! Good luck! Scott
