My 82 H27 had a very shallow bilge which had a pump that is only on when the breaker is on, it has no float switch. Is there a reason Hunter did this rather then putting a float in? I am debating locating a float a bit higher up maybe in one of the corners of the engine compartment so that if there is a problem when the boat is at the dock and I am not there it will TRY to pump out some water if it gets high enough...does this make sense to any one or am I wasting my time?

It's never a waste of time to install a float switch and I'd also suggest you wire it and the pump directly to the batteries as it is useless unless there is always power to it or you forget to keep the breaker on.

Hey Mike, There has always been a float switch on my 1984 h27. The botton breaker is designated as bilge pump. My problem with the float switch has been it leaves to much water in the bilge. It won't go on until there is atleast 3 inch of water and when I sail and the boat heels, water comes out above the floor. I would not recomend placing the switch higher - I'm looking for a way to adjust the float so it will activate the pump sooner. Beciuse of all of the water in the bilge, recommend doing wiring connections outside of bilge. Good luck. Tony

low profile bilge pump

I came across a non-submersible sump pump that I was thinking of mounting in the seat locker where the bilge line runs out. the advantage they claim with this pump is the pump will run until there is about a 1/4" inch of water in the bilge. From what I read the "electronic switch" is built into the suction foot so it kicks on and off with minimal water. my issue is it is 300gph which is low. But I have no pump now so I figure it is better then nothing. Has anyone ever installed a pump like this? How well did it work? The one I am looking at is a WHALE.
