A little annoying that some sealife had blocked up the water seacock to the water cooling system. The water was flowing fine to start with on starting the engine and then out at sea the flow diminished. Fortunately think we spotted and remedied in good time i think. I have decided to get an auto tiller pilot for Vacherin and was wondering whether there was any recommendations as to brand and set-ups for AV's?It looks like there was an auto tiller pilot installed by a previous owner (a hole has been drilled which would have impeded access to the locker). Ideally I would like to install it without impeding access to the cockpit locker if practicable?

Mine is the raymarine st2000 I think. That's one bigger than recommended.
I mounted it aft of the locker lid on top.
I have seen a picture of someone that mounted it inside the locker but I think
it might get on your nerves if you need to press buttons.
I made an aluminum piece that is shaped like a Z sort of to make the pin
on the tiller the same height as the pilot.
I mounted the connector on the wall just lower than the pilot. I would do this
differently if I were to do it again. I would put the power socket below the aft
cockpit locker and traveler bar so no feet can kick the connectors.

I like Raymarine tiller pilots. I've had both the ST1000 and the ST2000. The 2000 is identical in size, operation, and outside appearance as the 1000, but is quite a bit more hefty in the internal mechanism.I'd recommend the ST2000 as it will last longer and operates well under severe conditions ... well worth the extra expense, about $475 as opposed to $388 on Amazon.com .My only experience with Simrad tiller pilots was with an old TP10, so I'm no help there.One thing I really like is that if you are heading for a gps waypoint the tiller pilot can be connected to the gps "NMEA out" so that it follows the course set by the gps. I find this very useful when having to motor a long distance in calm weather and want to be free of the helm. It also works while sailing. I found the instructions for this online, but they have since disappeared. Luckily I made a copy, and it's posted on the Yahoo Vega files section under GPStoAutoPilotInterface.pdfMany thanks to the originator, Rick Hall.Peter.
I went with the Simrad TP22, which is their mid-range tiller pilot. The TP10 has enough power to handle the Vega, however, it doesn't has the interface capabilities like the TP22 and TP32. I installed the B&G Zeus chart plotter and was able to tie the TP22 into my NEMA2000 backbone easily. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to mount the TP22 because the distance up the tiller, according to the instructions, does put it over the cockpit hatch. I have the original straight tiller on V3283 and use a TP22 with the
fitting on the cockpit just aft of the locker lid. It works a treat.
I have the tiller slightly raised to get the correct angle for the auto
helm.

For what it is worth I mounted the "cup" for my Simrad TP10 aft of the locker cover (so further aft than recommended by Simrad).
It allows the tiller to be rotated through a larger angle and keeps the locker accessible when TP is in use.
Presumably the TP is working harder but I have had this setup for about 3 years without problems up to now...

On Sin Tacha I mounted the tiller pilot aft of the locker lid and it ran there perfectly for the six years I owned the boat. On the Ballad the locker lids are a lot longer and I had to mount it in the lid. It's inconvenient when accessing the locker ... I far preferred the setup on the Vega. The Raymarine instructions are adamant about mounting it exactly as per their directions, but in my view there are so many variables involved that there is plenty of room for a little movement one way or another. As already pointed out, mounting it slightly aft gives you more swing on the tiller, and careful sail trim can help ease excess loads. In heavy seas the pilot saws back and forth, trying to keep a straight course, but this can be lessened by adjusting the "sea state" or "dead band" setting. This causes the pilot to gradually ignore repetitivemovements of the boat and respond only to true course variations.Peter.
Thank you for all the recommendations. I think a Simrad Tp10 sounds like an ideal option for my budget and will try and fit it aft of the locker doors.
