I want to install a Raymarine ST-1000+ tiller pilot on my 1980 O'Day 25. Since my boat is about 250 miles from where I live, I want to make sure that I take into consideration everything that I may need for the install.

If you have done this before, and have some suggestions, parts lists, gotchas, etc it would be appreciated to be armed with this info. My tiller arm is 'S' curved.
I want to install it so it is easily removable and as unobtrusive as possible.

thanks,
sPk

Of course the 222 O's will be different, but>>>

Here is my version of the instalation for the ST 1000. I wanted the same thing. To be able to remove it easily, so I made the bracket to mount the base. There is extentions available and the base are extra. A little pricey too. Maybe you could take / buy various extentions ahead and take to the boat and bring back what you don't use...

I had made two previous wood bases before I could get the strength to handle the tork needed to steer. Hope this helps / gets you ideas.

Autopilot installation

You're going to need to decide where to install the autopilot on your boat. I would suggest that you go ahead and purchase it anyway. You can always buy a mounting pedestal for it, or make one later, as I did for my O'Day 222. I made a pedestal and mounted it on the lid of my Starboard fuel compartment. I mounted the electric receptacle on the inside transom out of the way of anyone bumping into it and breaking it. I usually sit on the Port side when I sail and I need access to the lazarett on that side, so mounting the pilot on that side was out of the question. The fuel locker lid seemed to be a good choice as drilling holes through it wouldn't require caulking and sealing out water leaks. The mount that I made is detachable and I've been using it for years with no problem. I'm planning on making a new one soon out of 1" stainless steel pipe very similar to what I'm using now. As Chuck pointed out, they do have these pedestals all ready made up and all you have to do is cut them to fit, but you can purchase these anytime. You will inevitably need a bracket that fits under your tiller because of the shape of the tiller. Years ago, I started out with the Autohelm 800 and I loved it. Now I have the Autohelm ST 1000+ and have been using it constantly for the past couple of years now. I wouldn't sail without it. I hear guys on the forum talk about single handing by equating halyards led back to the cockpit, but to me single handing begins with a good autopilot.

Autopilot Installation

Go to Raymarine web site and download the installation instruction. I had to make a special block to meet minimum dim. and special bracket for the tiller. I would get these dim.'s ahead of buying the autopilot.
