Auto reverse monitor

I was thinking of buying an auto reverse monitor to look under my foresail while sailing to windward. The setup would be to put the camera onto the pulpit and then put the monitor near the helm. The camera should stand up to the marine environment and a real boon for seeing those pesky boats that come out of nowhere.

It seems that in order to have a wide enough view, the re resolution would need to be fantastic and the screen huge to spot traffic far enough in advance. Your eyes are way better than those backup cameras.

$50.00 fix to a $.05 problem!
Hey! I know... Just quit sailing backward!
Or heel the boat further, so you can see over the top of your headsail.

... maybe put it at the top of your mast. But those backup cameras are only made to look out about 15 feet. You might want an external security camera like you see in parking lots etc.

Don't use a deck sweeper headsail?

I have the same problem, I just peek under there a lot.

If you put one of these on the leeward side....

Never mind.... .you might actually run into more stuff

I had the same issue with my old 155 genoa. It wasn't quite a "deck sweeper", but it was low enough that I had to duck down frequently to see under it, even when seated, and it also frequently hung up and chafed on the pulpit rail. I found that sitting on the low side helped, but I didn't want to be down there all the time.

When I had new sails made last year, I had them raise the tack and foot of the new foresail about eight inches, just enough to clear the puplit rail. Sight line problem solved. It's not the low budget solution I think you were looking for, but for the reasons others already noted, I think that it's safest for you to just be vigilent about peaking under that foresail until you can acquire one cut a little higher.

One more thought, a long shot probably, but..... Do you have any room above the head of your foresail to raise it a few inches higher and put an extension on the tack shackle? Just raising it a few inches might improve the situation significantly.

Years ago I had a 14ft. daysailer and I believe that the jib had a clear window cut into the sail above the tack. If memory serves me it was about 8"x18". Would this be a solution or are there downsides?

I like rgrangers idea. My understanding is when sailing down wind this same unit while help greatly with your 2 point navigation.

Either way, your likely to worry less about the view beyond the sail and have much less fun!
