I am interested in obtaining ST4000-W autopilot for 1993 Hunter 28. I am concerned about installation problems. Any advice?

Put One In A V32

I installed one in a V32. The most difficult part was threading the electrical to the head unit and to the panel. What took the most thought was the placement of the compass. (I put mine under the chart table.) Calibration should be simple, but the manual isn't that intuitive. Over nine years, I had the drive serviced three times and had to have the head unit repaired once. There is a lever to engage the clutch. It is a bit stiff when the unit is new. Order another in case you break it (I did.) Good unit. I probably out 500 hours or more on it. Very satisfied. Good luck.

Check Clearances for shift and throttle.

I recently installed a ST4000+ Wheelpilot on an Express 35. The unit was installed on an Edson Pedestal. Before you buy the unit, make sure there will be adequate clearances between the drive unit which is installed on the backside of the wheel and both the shift and throttle controls (including full range of motion). The drive motor can interfere with the throttle or shift lever. The unit is simple to install and has only the contol head, drive and compass.

I did it

I installed an ST4000+ 2 years ago without difficulty. The only tricky part was threading the wires through the pedestal and out to the connector. I put the control unit in the cockpit on the port side aft of the cockpit seat and the compass in the midline under the forward V berth. It has worked fine both under sail and under power. Good Luck Alan Claunch

Cutting in to Edison etc.

First, what did you use to cut out the whole for the control unit in the Edison. Additionally, where did you all put the head unit? I have a Raytheon 520 chartplotter that takes up the whole front of the Edison stand. Not sure where I could put the head unit. Lastly, I had heard that you want the compass as far down and close to center as possible. Sounds like the V-berth would not be the best place for this? I was thinking about the area in front of the companionway steps under the bilge boards???

Why not WP300CX (WP30)?

After reading all the responses to your post, I am glad I purchased and installed the Simrad WP300CX (Newer model WP30). I have had it for almosyt a year with extensive use, and it has been very reliable. And the most important part, the installation is a breeze. Almost no tools required.
