Sheet To Tiller

Not necessarily. The concept is that the wheel is a tiller only backwards. So one either reverses the power pull of the line that goes to the jib sheet, as Bill described, when it gets to the wheel, OR, ya just tie it to the bottom of the wheel! Lots simpler. The trick is running the fairleads. As I've mentioned, I'm still working out how to do it on Aquavite. Had it running perfectly on our C25, but she had the mainsheet tackle right in the cockpit, so I used mainsheet to tiller for going upwind. Haven't used the jib to tiller, but understand the concept.

Hermit, John Letcher's book is probably over 300 pages long, and it's difficult to explain all his concepts which include wonderful sketch drawings and photographs, on a website forum like this. You & I have been discussing this concept for over a year based on different ideas you've come up with. You could grok up some moolah and buy it on Amazon - you'd love the book because he was a lot like you - industrious and looking for good answers to basic issues. Plus there's so much more in the book: he explains how vane gear systems work, too.

Google as Bill suggests and do some heavy and fun reading. Cruising World or Sail did a writeup on this (and got the lines wrong in their sketch which they corrected in the next letters to the editor section).

I will try it without the book first. I can't spend money right now. I have 70 or so days before my shipment of machines arrives from Taiwan. Then, hopefully, I will be buying what ever I want. And working on my boat in exotic locations.

Stu sent me a diagram and an editorial of a guy that set up a sheet to wheel. He had a spool mounted to the wheel from a windvane application. I made a wheel tonight. I also bought a furler tonight. So when I get it all hooked up, I will let you know if I can get it to work and what my formula is.
BTW if someone wants to make their own wheel spool. I used 1/2" UV stabilized plastic, and a router with a circle jig. This one is 3 layers. 16' OD, with a 14.25" spool inside.
I don't know how crucial the diameter of the spool is. I guess I will find out when I hook it up.
Does any one know how to hook it up to a main sheet? since I am sailing around only with a main right now.

I have it mounted on the wheel now. This has to be the hard part of doing sheet to wheel self steering. I couldn't get it centered, until I cut another circle jig out of plywood to be able to set it int he middle.
Now I will tie some blocks up on the deck in different places, and start pulling on the sheet from different angles and start experimenting on how to do this.
I really tried to get all the details right, like rounding all the edges to make it look west marine-ish.

How are you attaching to the rudder?

I get the idea of the wheel, just not sure how you are attaching to the rudder. It would make sense (in my mind) to attach to the round part on the rudder stock (name escapes me at the moment). Like your wheel attachment - look West Marinish.

The control lines don't lead to the rudder in any way. There are 2 control lines coming off the wheel. One goes to bungee cords and one goes to the jib sheet.
As the boat veers into the wind the jib sheet tension is eased, and the bungee cord pulls the wheel to leeward.
When the boats veers leeward pressure is increased on the jib and the jib sheet and the increase in pressure pulls the wheel to windward correcting the boat back on course.
