In the 38th annual Marina del Rey to San Diego race, Attitude Adjustment 2 finished first in class on elapsed and third on corrected. We had a good race and went outside the rumb line about five miles. Finished 106 miles in 23 hours. Marlyn and I are vegging out in Catalina for a week now. BTW, the Arizona Yacht Club came by trailered boat and charter and kicked our clubs posteriors very well. Thanks for the sail trim comments from AA2's photo last year. Something worked well. My handicap is a killer. I was scratch boat in class. Rick D.

Congrats!

Congrats on you win. I haven't raced my sailboat yet, but I know how it feels to win in a dirt car... it's a good feeling. Keep doing whatever you're doing and good luck.

Taking a third is wonderful. This puts you in the trophy ranks. You mention the sail trim critique from last year. Have you changed your sail trim technique from last year? When you say you went past the rumb line, do you mean mean the lay line?

Couple of Things, Alan....

The battle is always the rumb line to San Diego, or inside to pick up the costal breezes or outside to bet on a tad more wind. All this complicated a bit by the effect of the "Catalina Eddy". I went a bit outside to compensate for what I thought would be a weak offshore flow and to get away from a wind hole off Point Loma in San Diego. As far as sail trim, I added more twist and camber to the main. I have a tendency to use too much outhaul and main/vang tension. Seemed to add some more drive in lightish 10-12 knot true winds. I drove well close-hauled for several hours and both out-pointed and out-drove the competition, I think we had enough wind to get a bite on the wing shoal keel and the newish main and genoa just had a lot more versatility. Oh, and a fair bit of luck. Rick D.

Luck is always part of it! some you win, sounds like you made some good choices as well. The most significant thing, though, was the realization that small trim changes can translate into better boat speed. Subtle changes can make a serious difference, especially on a distance race. Congratulations, next year you'll be looking for a cannon and a 1st....nice work
