Attching the head stay

I have a difficult time attaching the headstay. Are there any clever tricks? I have a CDI furler and have tried a piece of line around that and pulling down with a vang to the bow ring on the hull. Today I achieved the connection by pulling down on the jib tack ring with a vang to the bow ring of the boat, but I do not like putting that kind of pressure on the jib luff. I suppose the proper way is to ease off on the shroud turnbuckles, attach the headstay and then take up on the shrouds. If there is a quicker, easier way I would like to hear about it. Thanks.

pressure on the mast

Have you tried to get someone to "lean" on the mast to reduce some of the pressure?

attaching cdi

I initially had the same problem/concern. Now I set up by myself. First I tuned the shrouds to the specs. Don't have to loosen them each time. Then I found that the insulation on the earth wire was catching on the bottom of the mast base and not allow it to sit reasonably flat. I use the old jib halyard and gin pole setup and once the mast is upright I usually have to shortern up the jib halyard a little as I run out of purchase on the main sheet (blocks come together). I go slow when getting close. I usually stop when I have about 1" then I manually pull down on the luff tape to put the pin in. If on the trailer I pull directly down on the luff tape in line with the pin hile on the trailer lader. I also found that now the mast base pin (tabernackle) is now loose, it use to be under a lot of pressure, think it was from the insulation binding under there. good luck.

Attaching Furler

I use the same technique - either attach a line to the bow eye and then to the furler base or the latter-furler connection. Seems to work OK. I wish there was an easier way but using the vang as a "come-a-long" works for me.

I also freed up the jib jam cleat by putting a cleat on the mast for mast raising (see attached photo), so I can use the spare jam cleat for the reefing system.

Am I missing something here?

I also have CDI furler, I just crank down the "mast raising system", ie the jib halyard to the main sheet via the gin pole, and put the pin in the forestay. No loosening the rigging or anything. If you are running out of room between the blocks, you are starting out with too much slack shorten up the jib halyard. I guess maybe I don't understand the question.

my main sheet must be a tad shorter than some ? as i run out of room when cranking down so i have to shorten about 4" once it is up. even when i pre-tention the jib halyard prior to raising.. but the other steps used seem excessive and it should all be able to be done with the gin pole and main sheet set up.

Gin Pole

Make sure you attach your Gin Pole at less than a 45 degree angle to the mast while it's on the traler. I set mine about 35 degrees. This should give you enough room to tighten with the mainsheet alone and get the forstay attached.

I let the main sheet all out until it hits the stopper. That leaves 8 inches to hold)Tighten the jib hayard next and up it goes. I also filed the connection point for the fitting to fit better. I use a 3 inch pin which also makes it easy. PS. the two screws holding the struts to the deck were loose ready to fall out so check them often.

mast raising and CDI

I rarely do much with the main sheet tackle in mast raising. I get everything nice and tight and use the jib sheet around the winch to raise the mast. Once you get it up straight I then use the mainsheet tackle to tension everthing down to attach the furler.

Thanks for the input

10 replies - Many thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I have been setting up afloat. It may be easier to step the mast before launching when that is an option. Pulling down on the CDI from below would be much easier.
