Attaching the main sail

How does the the tack of my main sail attach to the goose neck. There's a "U" shaped bracket above the point where the boom is attached. Next to that is what I am assuming is a hook used to reef the main.I think I'm missing either a bolt or a pin.

Kurt, i have a 84 222 the boom attaches to the mast via a 1" square stock piece of box metal. there are holes adjacent each other. this square stock bolts one side to the boom and (then perpendicularly to the first bolt) a secound bolt attaches the square stock to the mast. it form a kind of universal joint allowing the boom up, down and side to side movment . hope this helpsbob

Thanks for the feed back Bob. My 222 is an 84 as well. I've attached the boom to the one inch "u" shaped square box. My question is above that attachment point I have another Square "U" shaped box with the open end facing up as , the boom connection faces aft. Does the lower corner of my main sail , the Tack, attach to that point. If so is there suppose to be a bolt or pin?

Mainsail Tack O'Day 222

It seems that 1984 "222's" abound, as that's what mine is. For mine the tack of the main is pinned by a 5/16 in. dia. "quick pin" that goes through the holes above where the boom is connected to the gooseneck. These holes, for the tack, are in the "box" that has the reefing hook on the starboard side. I suppose that a 5/16 s.s. bolt and elastic cored nut could do the job if you don't have the quick pin.
