I just bought a heel meter and a winch handle holder which I'd like to mount to the bulkhead area. What's the best way to attach stuff like this? I haven't put any holes in the boat yet and I don't want to screw it up!!
When I'm not absolutely sure about a mounting location for an item, I use super duty velcro to mount it for a try under real sailing conditions. That way I find if it snags sheets, skins ankles, is too far away to reach on a big tilt, gets in the way of winching, etc. If it works and I like it, then I use stainless sheet metal screws in predrilled holes and a generous amount of silcone sealer.Hope this helps.
I picked up a couple of the shower caddies shown on the 3m site (see attached link) for in the cabin, and some hooks. The command stuff really seems to work well on smooth fiberglass, I have had the caddies full of stuff, with binoculars hanging from them for extended trips and towing. They sell the caddies and mounting strips at walmart.I also use the industrial strength velcro(available in white at home depot for about 8 bucks for a around 5' x 2".
Well we all know that screws are not the answer. Fiberglas is glass and eventually the screws will pull out. I have been using blind fasteners (or pop rivets). They are pretty strong and if done well, permanent. One caution about velcro. It is eventually stronger than the adhesive that you glue it up with. If you are not going to be pulling the velcro off, you might think about glueing whatever it is to the inside of the cabin. Velcro's grip gets stronger with time, too.I have worked with velcro a lot on the interiors of aircraft. Even such adhesives as 3M 1300L will pull off. Most velcro strips on aircraft are glued and pop riveted. I attended a parachute seminar last year, and one of the reasons to have one's parachute repacked, is so that the velcro is seperated annually. Otherwise, it's grip can become greater than the parachutist's ability to rip it apart! John S
I've installed several of the bathroom/shower baskets that have suction cups. put some superglue on the cups, then stuck them.have not had one pull out yet.
