My swing keel cable broke last fall, and I pulled the boat out of the water onto the trailer with only mild difficulty. None of the local marinas have shown the slightest interest in hauling the boat up and reattaching the cable for me. Does anyone know of a way to do it A. while on the trailer, or B. while in the water? Does anyone know if Catalina still offers manuals for older C22's? Mine's a '78. Thanks for any help.

Keel Cable

First, get to know the people at catalina direct (www.catalinadirect.com). They have a manual that covers the boat bow to stern. There you will find a new cable wire. Very simple to replace. I would do it out of the water. The key is to get to the fitting on the keel. Once you can see that the rest is a piece of cake. While you are in the process of changing the keel, you may want to inspect the whole system. Check the winch, the ball that the cable feeds through, the fitting in the keel. Catalina direct has replacement parts for all these, and they are always willing to give technical support to your project. They can also be reached at 800-959-7245. Good Luck.

It's possible to do it incorrectly

Curt: It is possible to install the cable incorrectly, so follow Rich's advice and order the book from Catalina direct, so that you can see how the cable is routed correctly. I had my boat suspended in a garage from chains when I replaced my cable. I know what you mean about some marina's being reluctant to mess around with the swing keel of the C-22. Aldo

Replace Keel Cable

Curt: You should be able to get the cable semi-locally from: Maryland Marina, 3501 Red Rose Farm Road Baltimore, MD 21220-0409 410 335 8722. They usually have 1 or 2 in stock, they may also be willing to replace it for you. If you decide to replace it yourself it's really simple. First you need to jack up the rear of the boat from the trailer and place 8" of blocking between the hull and the bunkboards directly over the rear upright. This will expose the cable mounting eye and give you enough clearence to fish the cable up through the thruhull opening and behind the roller. The staff at the marina can also give you excellent advice on many types of repairs and upgrades for C22's (they used to be a catalina dealer) in fact a few of the tips and ideas that I have posted on this forum came from them when I needed help or advice. I replaced my keel cable about 7 or 8 years ago and it was fairly easy, the toughest part was jacking up the boat. If you want more information or need some help, contact me, I only live a few miles north of Elk Neck In Calvert, in fact it's most likely in the same zip code: North East, Md.
