Just bought a used 1984 27' Catalina. My Ranger tipped off its supports and damaged the keel. Good news was the insurance company totaled it for more than I orignally paid. I now want to find out if it is possible to hang an outboard on the stern whose prop will clear the rudder. Has anyone done this and if so what kind of motor mount was used? I don't trust older inboard engines. The outboard I have is an 8 h.p. Yamaha, long shaft. Thanks in advance to anyone who has some information to offer.:)

Clarify for me, you have an '84, which probably will have a Universal Model 18 diesel and you don't want it? I love mine and will never use an outboard for anything but a boat anchor again. If you truly don't want it, post on here and someone will gladly, gleefully, laughingly, take it off your hands. That particular model is the best ever built to date and uses very little fuel. I also have an '84 C27 and love it.

I will see over the weekend if we have a C27 with an outboard on our local lake. Mounting an OB should be easier on the C27 than the C22 or C25 with their transom hung rudders - and we smaller boat guys have OB that clear the rudder.

Go look at a boat with a typical lift up OB bracket and make some measurements. The OB bracket probably sticks out far enough when down that there is no problem - but check. Almost sure that all you need is to offset the OB to one side enough distance - it will work.

I assume that don't have a C27 with the OB well. Think of it this way - the bracket will push the OB back farther than the well mount would. Measure - its gotta work.

I have seen outboards mounted on C27 but only in fresh water. They mounted on the transom without rudder problems. If you go this route then it is almost a must to have an electric starting engine. Reaching over the transom like I did on my C22 is not easly done on your boat. Also spend the extra money to buy a STRONG spring assisted raising mount. West Marine has a Garelick#71056.01 for about $200. That was the mount I had used with outstanding performance. There is another Garlick mount that is tougher and better for about twice that but really not needed.
Hope this helps.
