My boat has a Univeral (Atomic) M-15, 11hp diesel engine. The previous owner told me the only way to shut off the engine was to place the shifter in reverse and close the throttle. It does kill the engine but it will only work when the boat is in the water. Is this engine supposed to have a kill switch?

all the info I have found states that the throttle has a spring to push against from the closed position to stop the engine. My throttle doesnt have a stop or a spring, it revs the engine forward and backwards. I think the problem is in the throttle itself but cant find any information or description on the web.

my c27 has the m18 diesel and has a kill switch (more like a pull knob attached to a cable connected to a stop lever on the engine).
See pic of your engine below.

More than likely your fuel shut off switch ( the knob that you pull out) just needs adjustment. It's not totally closing and that's why you have to put it in reverse. With boat in water it's creating just enough load to kill it. When boat is out of water there's no load. This is just a adjustment of the cable at the rack on the engine. Very easy fix. Follow the shut off cable to the engine and you will find where to adjust it.

I have the 5411 Universal that appears to be very similar to yours, and has the same output rating. I shut off my engine just by throttling back on the throttle lever all the way, until the engine receives no fuel and cuts off without the use of a seperate kill lever.
I would get your fuel shut off fixed right away because its not good for your engine to shut it down by running it in reverse. It stresses out the engine more than necessary, & it risks starting it later in reverse gear. this makes it very hard to start in gear by mistake, really wears on the engine & tranny, & risks the boat lurching backwards & hitting something if started in gear. Good luck on your cable adjustment.

The top of those two pictures shows a STOP LEVER, in the forward starboard side of the engine. Inside the box on the side of the engine is the mechanism that's attached to the stop cable, if you indeed have one. The spring's inside that box. It's a tricky maneuver to get to and hard to work on. Best thing is to find the opening and shoot some PB Blaster in there if the spring is stuck and work it back and forth by hand before you even think of an attempt to do the brain surgery inside the box. If you need to do the surgery, get back to us here and I'll find a friend of mine who's done it and may be able to help with the details. You could also drill down some more on the mainedieseldirect site into what they call "Groups" and find the blowup details of the parts inside the box and see what is in there in much more graphic detail.
