Total newbie here looking for some engine repair advice.

I recently bought a Ticon 30' with an 5411 Atomic engine. The exhaust elbow is disconnected and looks like it has been for some time (threads are rusting off, lots of carbon build up). Pic attached.

Trying to figure out:
  1. How likely is it to find a replacement elbow exactly like this one? Where would I begin to look?
  2. If I can't find a replacement elbow with the same geo uhmetry, then would I have to move the muffler? (I assume the black drum-looking thing is the muffler)
  3. Is there a chance at a temporary fix here? I was thinking maybe some kind of heat resistant sleeve that could be clamped to the two pipes to reunite them. Kind of like how the end of the elbow connects to the muffler with a rubber sleeve and pipe clamps.
Any help would be appreciated! And please correct me on any incorrect terminology.

Take the wrap off the pipe then you can see what's up. You probably have a standard couple of elbows and a nipple on the top end of the straight pipe from the engine.. They are probably fused together from corrosion and heat cycles, but you may be able to unscrew and replace.. if not, take that stuff and the mixing wye to a machine shop and they can duplicate it .. The mixing wye may be able to be re-threaded and re-used .. The threaded end at the engine flange may be cracked as well at the thread roots so inspect carefully.. It may be good to use a "hump pipe" just above the muffler to add flexibility to the wrapped pipe so that it doesn't get stressed when the engine moves on its mounts.
Something like this: Exhaust Hump Hose 1-5/8"I.D X 6" (catalinadirect.com)
Probably not the correct size, so measure carefully..

Start looking at the nearest big box HW store with a good selection of black iron pipe. The 180° elbow is hard to find locally, however McMaster Carr carries them.

It was pretty common practice back in the day for the boat builders to custom build the exhaust and injection elbow. Yours has probably been replaced at least once as it is insulated with fiberglass wrap and not an asbestos wrap.

When I rebuilt the riser and injection elbow on my Sabre 30 with a Volvo I had the welding shop at high school weld the injection inlet to the part.

After, the one on the right was a temporary repair assembled while cruising, it worked but was a little iffy. The one on the left was the final one. Be sure to use high temp pipe compound and wrap it with fiberglass muffler tape available at auto parts stores in the performance section.

If the water injection point is still intact, you might be able to get a piece of silicone hose to put between the broken pipe pieces…it would offer some flexibility.

Dave,

The injection into a simple pipe T fitting is a very good alternative to a welded nipple. Nice work. I've only seen that once before: a friend had his new-to-him M25 engine on a dolly in his garage to check it out before he put it in his boat and did just that! Worked great.
