white smoke sounds like water... have you checked the thermostat? If that sticks open it could cause that... if the engine is not operating in normal conditions it could cause malfunction, they say... but (mine runs between 100 and 140 degrees depending on the task i give it.) the marine thermostat bypasses water into the exhaust. A possibility could be that there was too much water in the exhaust, thus a lot of smoke when it heats up... just like watching vapor from a kettle or a blown headgasket in a car. You didn't have water backwash into the exhaust, did you??? check out moyer marine on the east cost... they have a lot of info, parts and tech stuff for the atomic 4. There is a manual they sell. Not too bad. I wouldn't call it the creme de la creme, but it is as good as it gets if you want more than the basic but not the absolute, absolute, absolute nitty gritty stuff! They seem to be willing to help for the nitty gritty stuff... check out their website. They seem to be the authority around these days! The moyer manual has helped me a lot with basic matters. There is also a manual that is for sale on ebay a lot of times. The ebay manual is basically a mediocre photo copy of the original manual that came with the engine and then some specs, but cheaper than the moyer manual. The moyer manual is more specific in terms of what do to for a rebuild, etc. I would check out the thermostat and housing and see if that is all coroded on the inside. Where are you located, fresh? salt? If it is still in the water, take it out a couple of times and see what it does. If it went away after the clean, i wouldn't sweat it too much, but then it is your call and decision on when to expect the engine to run under what conditions and emergencies... Good luck!
