Hi, I want to change the oil in my Atomic 4 and have looked at the engine manual from Moyer Marine however it makes no reference to an oil filter. It looks like there's a spin-off oil filter installed (see pic). In presume that's what it is. Are these filters a standard type and if so would anyone know the type/part number? Thought I'd ask here as it will be Monday before I can call Moyer....

Most likely not an oil filter but a fuel filter, the large one before the fuel pump and the small polisher in the photo after. Some folks put an aftermarket filter from the forward port oil gallery port with a return drilled in near the transmission but I think that is rare.

That looks more like a fuel filter. I don't believe A4's have oil filters, at least not stock. I remember reading somewhere the A4 engine was designed to be used in landing craft for the invasion of Japan. After the atomic bombs caused Japan's surrender, the landing craft were no longer needed. That's where the name Atomic 4 came from. The engine was intended to survive long enough to make one or two trips to the beach and eventually get blown up, never needing an oil or filter change. Ironically it had one of the longest production runs of any engine made.

Thanks guys for your rapid replies, much appreciated. The boat is new to me so I wasn't sure what I was looking at. The manual made no reference to an oil filter so I assumed it either didn't have one or it was not made by universal and external. The oil lies currently clean and up to level so I'll run it like that for now and change it in due course.

Hi CJ, I'm a new Atomic 4 owner(currently not running) and have never heard that story! Very interesting indeed. I'm going to dig a little deeper and find more information but thanks for the history lesson! When I purchased my old ('73) Pearson 30 last fall, I had hoped to get it running in the not-too-distant future but the reality of the bank balance is slowing progress towards that goal. The PO tried to take the head off and broke 3 of the four studs in the process. Ah, the joys of old boat ownership!
