Do I spend $380 for an ATN dousing sock or $179 for a generic from West Marine? Comments on both would be appreciated.

just bought one from atn

i have never used a generic sock or an atn for that matter but i just ordered an atn and they had it to me the same week. i think the only real important aspect of the sock is if the line runs along the sock in it's own compartment. i know the atn does and supposedly that's why they are very good.

ATN is good stuff...

I have an ATN sock and am quite pleased with it. I'm not sure what the WM sock looks like but I'd have to guess it's not as nice. The ATN has an inside pocket for the lines to run in and a custom molded ring around the bottom instead of just a heavy wire loop. It also has a swivel at the top and a long grey stripe down the whole length of the sock to make it easy to see twists. If the WM model has these features you could certainly save some money by buying it but my vote is for ATN even though it's more expensive. Have fun with your new sock!

I have seen both

I have seen and used both and this is one area that you get what you pay for. The ATN is very nicely made and thought out. The others will work but are not quite as refined. Which to choose depends on how important that extra money is to you and wether you are willing to settle for a little more effort to use the sail. Dan Sheehan
