Hey gang: Just got back home from the Atlantic City Sailboat show...WOW!!! The brand new Catalina 350 (and I do mean brand new since the deck was joined to the hull only a couple weeks ago!) was christened by Frank Butler, Jerry Douglas, and Sharon Day. Frank made a big deal of telling everyone how hard they worked to get hull #1 done in time for the show. This boat is going to be another big winner for Catalina. Although it hasn't even been in the water yet (talk about faith!) and despite a relatively small number of problems on this first boat they've gotten dozens of checks committing to purchases and the first production boat won't even be ready until the summer! I haven't checked yet, but I suspect the 350's specs and photo(s) should be available on the Catalina web site by now. Both Jerry and Frank told me they expect the 350 to be one of the best sailing boats they've ever produced. For thouse of you closer to "down island" the 350 will also be at the Maimi "Strictly Sail" show in mid-Feb. Recommend you check it out. I talked to the first couple to purchase one at the Atlantic City show and totally loaded (everything but a/c since they are in New England), they paid somewhere around $145K. That was with everything "factory" installed. If you are considering a new Catalina this year in that price range, I'd check her out. In my humble opinion, she was heads and shoulders a better boat than the Hunter 356 (which is the Cruising World 2002 "Boat of the Year." As for the rest of the show, Catalina really stood out. Lines for our boats were easily twice as long as those for all other manufacturers (all the big ones were there). All models but the C-34 were represented and I saw a lot of folks sitting around tables in the "deal making" section. Oh yea, Frank Butler and group put on a great cocktail party on Friday night! Smooth Sailing. Tim Leighton (S/V "Magic")

AC Show

Hey Tim, I to went to the AC show. It was smaller than I expected but was good. The 350 was interesting. It was clear to me that it was a rush to get it to the show as some things were going to have to change before it goes into production. The salon table was nearly unusable! Try sitting on the seat and raising the table leafs. You can't do it. The rear cabin door bottom was cut on an angle which made entrance and exit of the rear cabin a little dicey. At least until you get used to it. 145K for this boat fully equipped is a lot of money. But, hey who am I to tell people what to spent thier money on. In my opinion the 36 is layed out better with more usable space. The 350 has a lot of beam but I'm not sure what that got you in this boat. Different strokes... Some people don't like the 36 because the sink is right at the bottom of the stairs! Can't say I like that much either, but I still bought one. Everything is a tradeoff. I truly hope the people who buy the 350 are very happy with them. I spent a lot of time on the 42 (Wife wants one!)and got a feeling for how much bigger that is than the 36. It's big! I'm not crazy about the layout on that either, but I'm getting used to it. I spent some time on the 470, that boat is BIG! The bimini is about 14 feet accross. Ready to rock at 340K, that's real actual money! The 42 ready to rock should be around 215K... Still pretty big bucks. I enjoyed the Catalina owners party. As far as the show, I drove 5 hours, and stayed at Bally's casino. Would I do that show again, No, but it was fun. For all the shows I've done, the Newport in the water gets my vote for the best! Regards, Chris

A.C. show

Atlantic City is only a short drive for me, so I look forward to attending this show every year. I enjoyed seeing the new 350--it's a nice looking boat. I was also eyeing up the 320, which I think would be an ideal replacement for my 27. My wife doesn't agree--she thinks the 27 should be just fine right through the next century! Also had a chance to meet Herb Payson and talk with him for a few minutes. (He told me he just purchased a Catalina.) The show seminars are really enjoyable. Jerry Douglass spoke at the designer's forum, and Gino Morelli described the transatlantic record set aboard Playstation. Good stuff! Randy
