Asymmetrical Spinnaker Sheets

We will be getting an asymmetrical spinnaker soon and we are looking for suggestions on how many and where to put blocks and winches. Should we use blocks on traveler cars on the same track as the jib or should we mount blocks on the hull? Should we try and use the jib winches or install new winches on the aft pads? I hope you can get the gist of what I am looking for. Russ Her Diamond Ring

Sheet locations

Russell, if you email me a fax number I will fax you the pages from the owners manual with a diagram. Basically the sheets come back to a turning block (Schaeffer #05-15) mounted on the stern pulpit and on to the aft winch. Recommended sheets are (2) 3/8 braided dacron 55ft each Will you put a bowsprit on her or just use the anchor roller? Standard tack line recommendation is 3/8 x 4ft and runs from bow ring thru roller to tack. I prefer to run a long line from tack down to the roller and back over the deck to the cabin top winches. If you don't have these diagrams in your owners manual (Sails & Rigging tab), post your fax #

How dumb am I?

Andy, I have the pages but it made no sense that it shows blocks and winches on only the port side. Also it does not talk about reinforcing the blocks. Being a scuba instructor who sails, not a sailor who dives I always like to get the opinions of real sailors before I do something. Thanks for the reply. Russ

BLOCKS NOT MOUNTED

SO RUSS, Did I answer your question? The blocks are attached to ring on the stern rail with a shackle. The Schaeffer blocks as recommended have swivel heads. The sheets run from the sail to the block to the winch. There is absolutely no need to "mount" a block. On the other hand (end), my sheets have snap shackles for attaching to the sail. But then there's the story of the race..spinaker is up, we're haulin'*ss, I have to smart off and say "We're cookin' now", and bing-pop goes the shackle. I snapped it on poorly so only I could be blamed. Without a sock it was a rather exciting recovery!

Sheet config and tack

Hi Guys, I just got a 91 Hunter 30T that has a Asy. spinnaker, and I having some of the same questions. My last boat (Capri 25) had a standard spinnaker with guy pole. We ran the sheets back to traveling block mid deck then to a block by the stern then to the jib winches. The Configuration Andy noted didn't cover a mid ship block. It you would need that kind of control. Also on the bowsprit try down Hows the best way to tack. We have setup a 3ft line off the front of the anchor/bowsprit with a snap ring that we switch sheets as we tack. This is a real pain onder load. Could you have two sheets and pull the spinnaker across the bow on tacks (leave guy end attached to the bowsprit). Thanks Jim

Lines for the Doyle APC on our h27

4 foot tack line on a snap shackle to a convenient fitting on the bow (ahead of the forestay.) We actually take it around the forestay to the forward hole in the deck rail on the other side. Sheet goes from the clew to a snap shackle on the stern end of the deck rail. This one is a snap block - that is we can snap the sheet into it without the bitter end. From there, it comes forward to the sheet winch. This is a cruising set-up. Remember that you have to pull an asymetrical spinnaker around the forestay when tacking or gybing. (Unsnap sheet, sock down, around the forestay, switch the tack line, switch the sheet block, lead the sheet, then raise the sock on the new tack.) You can rig two sheets, and use a ring ahead of the forestay, but the unused sheet will go 3/4ths of the way around the boat! You can also pull the sail around the forestay without the sock, but the light fabric is definitely at risk.

Gybing

I gybe mine (I use 2 sheets)around the forestay. Start the gybe, release the working sheet, let the sail fly forward of the forestay, sheet in the new working sheet. Bob

Agree with Andy

No need to mount winches or other complicated gear. Just do like Andy says and use big snap shackles mounted to the aft stern. Then run the tack line up to the existing winches. By the way, Andy, what's your bowsprit made of? I've built 5 and they all bent. Please let me known at editor@vagazette.com

Bowsprits & Winches

Attn Bill, I started another forum just on the bowsprit issue. Check it out and respond there. In regards to winches, our 29.5 has aft mounted winches (2-speed). That way the sheets don't run across the cockpit and it easier to manage the spinaker. BTW, I sail with a 155 genoa and use the aft winches there also.
