Planning to purchase an asymmetrical spinnaker for the San Francisco bay for my Hunter 31. Any recommendations on sail weight (0.75, 1.5, etcc. ounce), special hardware, dousing sock, can the controls that release and retrieve the spinnaker lead to the aft cockpit, other input welcome?

Find a sailmaker you can trust

You should be able to find someone who will really listen to you, and lend his expertise to your needs.

We are very happy with our Doyle ASC asymetric and sock, but the sock really requires you to go forward to release the sail and douse it.

I was very intrigued by an article in Sail magazine this month about single line furlers (or Code Zero furlers) for drifters and asymetrics. Because this approach does away with the sock, it naturally rigs for control from the cockpit. It also provides for quick partial furling to gybe the sail. I would really consider this approach if I were buying an asymetric today.

In San Francisco Bay, you'll need the sock. The self-furling mech could be too light for the Bay. 0.75 is typical weight for spinnaker. If you'd like direx for a nifty spinnaker bowsprit to keep the thing ahead of the main, email me at bodonovan@vagazette.com

You will need two blocks to run the sheets thru, also need a "Tack",ie a fiberglass horse shoe shapped thinghy attacked to the headsail just above the roller drum. Here in florida I have a .75 "A"sail with no problem, if it gets about 15kts, I dont fly it.

You should have a sock to douse the sail with. The controls for the sock DO NOT reach the cockpit, so every thing is done at the mast.

Visit the " ATN" website and look at the video about the tack and the sock.

David, Deadline and The Office,

Thanks for everyone's input!! I visited the ATN web site and viewed the video. I am currently planning to purchase a 1.5 oz with ATN sock. My 1987 boat hardware is set up for a spinnaker and I have new sheets and halyards. Looking for a new experience

I would be interested to hear what angles you can sail without a sprit. I have a 3/4 oz cruising chute and find that it is blanketed by the main for much more than 15 degrees past beam reach. Ive tried all sorts to try and sail a bit deeper. I eventually got a symmetrical chute for racing as the assym didn'tgive enough advantage for the handicap loss.

I ordered my Doyle APC asymetrical sail today. Will use the ATN chute with it. I have the hardware on the boat installed already. I'm interested in seeing how much the mailsail helps or hinders its use. Will also try reefing the main and judge its impact. Luff is 49' and foot is 21'
