Anyone using the asymmetric spinnaker option with the 216? Has anyone installed this themselves using the factory kit and instructions? Any advice for the proper gybing procedure and pole position? Thanks!

Not much experience, but...

Paul, I can't offer much advice on the asym. We have the factory installed kit. We only hoisted it once last year, but then we only went out twice as we bought the boat late in the year. I thought the factory (dealer?) supplied sheets were too heavy, so I replace them with New England "Flite Line". Does that matter? Dunno, as I didn't try it with the factory sheets, I went right to the Flite Line. If you would like to take a look at the system as installed on our boat I'd be glad to show it to you. It's not to far to Fredericksburg. Heck, maybe we can even figure out some way to get the boat in the water so we can do a little experimenting. Dave

My dealer "installed" my spinnaker as per the factory instructions and really screwed it up. I thought the factory instructions were quite good and wished I had done it myself. Dealer did not know the diff between a coming (sp?) and a rail, couldn't measure, etc. I would do it myself. One note of caution: I had cotter pins instead of cotter rings on my spreaders and I ripped the spinnaker the first time I raised it. Make sure you have cotter rings and use rigging tape to cover all sharp spots.

Cockpit Rachet Blocks

I received the kit yesterday and everything looks very straight forward. Out of curiosity how many ratchet blocks in the cockpit does everyone have? They sent 4 and the instructions call for 4. But all pictures I've seen of 216's with a spinnaker only have 2 and everything is really inconsistent (sometimes on the coaming, sometime on the rail, and then one with a completely different setup). With the 4 - how would you run the rigging? Aft block 1st, then the forward block to the person trimming the spinnaker? Thanks...

Yeah man - i travel non stop during the week so maybe we can sink up sometime in the spring/summer. Where do you normally go out of?

The ratchet blocks mount on the coaming, NOT on the rail. If you mount them on the rail, the lines will rub over the coming and mark the finish. Spin sheets go the the aft block then to the fore block. I added additional fair leads for the bowsprit lines that extend/return the bowsprit. I found the bowsprit lines rubbed my hull and melted grooves. A couple extra fair leads took care of the problem in a jiffy. At the same time, I may have installed extra fair leads for the jib furler also. They are inexpensive so I bought a handful and installed them wherever the lines would touch the deck.

Fredericksburg

Paul Walsh, The 2 times we got out last year, we used Westmoreland State Park up on the Potomac. We really want to come down to Deltaville this year. We are hoping to find other places too as the year progresses. I think it would be really great to meet up with other 216 owners. We have a club up here for our Miatas and we've made the best friends thru that group. I think the same would happen with the sailing. And it would be fun to sail side-by-side with another 216...unless you're much faster! ;-) I'll stay in touch. I usually check in this forum once a day.

Great!!

Thanks for all the replies. I finished installing the hardware this weeked for the spinnaker - the sail is coming in within the next few weeks. I put the cockpit blocks in the correct location - figured the rubbing would be a problem. I might be able to get it down to Deltaville in the next week or two to complete the mast installation, get my kicker ready, and hopefully step the mast for the season. My mast is currently down there in covered storage. We'll hopefully hit some good spring winds for the next few months. I also installed the v-berth and made some overall cabin improvements so I'll finally take some photos when the weather is nice (rained today and was cold out there working on stuff) and post them up here. As far as getting together to do some sailing - I think that would be awesome - I can direct you to a secret ramp where you can step and put her in without any lines or people... Thanks everyone!
