Asymmetric Spinnaker Setup

I recently picked up a used asymmetric spinnaker and now need to set up the boat to fly it. I've seen some boats use a collar which the spinnaker tack and the downhaul line are attached to that slides up and down around the furled headsail. I'm assuming the purpose is to keep the tack on the centerline of the boat. It also seems like I've seen some boats without this collar. Is this collar something I should have? Also, any other tips about setting up the boat for an asymmetric spinnaker? Thanks!

Asymwrric spinaker (Genaker) setup

On my 22' Venture I tack mine down at the head stay, usually with a short tail. Then fly it like any other Genoa. Just be careful to set the sheet blocks as far to the stern as possible and to be very careful when tacking so as to not wrap the sail. I don't gybe with it up as it is too easy to foul the sail. how big is your boat?

Hello, A few questions: How big is your boat? Will you be sailing short handed or fully crewed? If your boat is big (25' or more), and especially if you will be sailing with only 1 or 2 other people, I would recommend you use a 'sock' like from ATN. The sock will make launching and recovering the chute much easier. Regarding the coller, you don't need it with an assymetric. I think you WANT to be able to let the tack sag off at certain times. My boat came with an assymetric spinnaker and ATN sock. I use a tack line that I run back to the cockpit. It's pretty easy for my wife and I to sail with the chute, and it's a lot of fun. One of the major sail companies, I think it's North, has a great video on flying the chute. Atn also has some hints on their site. http://www.atninc.com/

It's 34'

I have a 34' Beneteau. The spinnaker did come with a sock so that should help since I'd expect most of the time to have a short handed crew (wife and/or son). I have been perusing the saling mags for pictures and most I'm noticing now don't have the collar around the furled headsail. Thanks for the resonse.

Use a tack Line

The response indicating use of a tack line is good. I have that setup with a North Asymetric in a Beneteau 323. This allows you to adjust the height of the tack from the cockpit. I also have turning blocks mounted almost at the stern, and use snatch blocks at times on the sheet as a twing to keep the sail from climbing. The north video is great, available as aCD rom, and shows how to use the sail with a sleeve. It works

david, here's more help for you

Nice info page. CruisingDirect is owned by North Sails. My CD cruising spinnaker came with the collar. I rarely use it when I'm singlehanding because you have to go forward to hook, and unhook, the thing to the forestay. Experiment with it, you'll have fun. http://www.cruisingdirect.com/InstructionalPage.htm
