First sail of the season this week and became reaquainted with the poor downwind performance of my boat. Thought I'd inquire as to opinions regarding using a spinnaker as opposed to a whisker pole. I don't race so speed isn't the issue it's just being able to go downwind when I need to. Either option is gonna require some hardware just want to be sure either is worth it as opposed to just using the iron gennie.

What Legend do you have?

I've owned the 37.5 and 40.5 and both go well down wind with main and jib on a 135-155 degree wind off the bow.
I NEVER go dead down wind, too much trouble polling out the jib or running wing-n-wing with the jib slanting. Broad reaching is much faster and you get some wind blowing in the cockpit.

Re: What Legend do you have?

'94, 35.5 Legend, actually sailed yesterday and got pretty good results doing exactly what Bill suggests a real deep broad reach, finally just rolled in the jib since it was shadowed by the main anyway. Still probably gonna take Glory Days advice and look into an assymetrical. Now only problem is I don't have a spinnaker halyard on the mast, nor is there even a bracket to attach. Anybody had any luck mounting one to come down outside the mast and does the roller furler attachement get in the way?
