I am in the process of purchasing a 26M but am miffed by the cost of the options. It seems fairly expensive to add essential and luxury items to the boat. I am also a new sailor and plan to use the boat for extensive weekend and week trip on the Chesapeake Bay. Any recommendations for items that are a must and should be added before delivery and items which can be added after purchase. Thanks B. Charles

Hope this helps.

Congratulations on your planned purchase. I expect delivery of my new M next week (Hull #31). For what it's worth, here a list of "add-on" I'm putting on my M. Genoa w/ CDI Furler Main & Headsail Covers Large Capacity Marine Head with Deck Cleanout VHF Garmin 168 GPS & Sounder Second Set Of Winches In Cockpit Main Halyard To Cockpit House Battery w/ Combiner & Switch Forward Lifelines Lowered To Deck (To avoid snagging the Genoa). Swim Ladder Compass Suzuki DF50 w/ 12 Gal. Tank These are all dealer installed options. Including all of this and few additional items I can't think of at the moment I was out the door for around $30K including tax and license. Hope this helps. Tony

Thanks tony

Thanks alot Tony for getting back to me. Your list is close to the one I came up with and listed some items I had overlooked. We are expecting delivery around May 25th. I'm sure I will be using this forum quite a bit after that. Bob

You should check out this site as there is a large number of X and and growing number of M owners sharing information.

Another aspiring 26M buyer/owner

Noticed we have the same home port. I plan on buying a 26M too. I've done a ton of research on M's & X's. Just saw my first 26M at the Kent Island boat show last weekend. Really impressed with it. If you'd like, e-mail me at lkuhn@cnmc.org. We can compare notes.

yet another potential new owner

I have been looking at the X for a few years now, waiting until I could afford to upgrade from my V222. Now they come out with the M! Decisions, decisions.

You could save some $$

By skipping, waiting, or adding yourself. The 2nd set of winches really aren't needed -- you could do fine with a handheld VHS and GPS. The lifelines don't really need to be lowered (the effect on gennie shape isn't that big a deal -- especially with the higher cut sail on the furler. As as for the marine head with pumpout -- I actually prefer the porta-pottie. Emptying it after a weekend is easier than trying to find a pumpout before pulling the boat out.

a little more

would also include a flexible solar panel, mounted between front windows, hooked up to batteries with a switch, that way the batteries stay fully charged. I also added sail slugs, lazy jacks with double reef lines led to cockpit. It makes lowering and storing the mainsail very simple. should say I eventually had the dealer do all this work. Unless you live in between a Home Depot and West Marine store getting all the little parts to install stuff will take all your time (and the boat is stored in your driveway). Sailors should sail, riggers work on boats. At $65 a pop, after a couple of days of camping I just throw the entire portapottie in the dumpster. Life is way too short to clean up that stuff.

Picking up my "M" tomorrow

The only things we're getting besides a bare bones 26M is an installed Honda 50 and a pump-out Canada legal head, all ready to go with the following options: Surge brakes, genoa & equipment, CDI furler, vang, mast raising sys, swim ladder, and all the cushions. I'm a die hard do-it-yourselfer and this is the stuff I plan to install before we take her out the first time; A compass depth sounder bilge pump VHF radio & (hopefully) a mast mounted antenna Misc. safety equipment to outfit the boat. hand held GPS charts fire extinguisher flare/distress kit first aid kit inflatable life vests an extra 6 gal gas tank anchor toolbox extra prop I've never sailed anything this big, but I know I've been on sailboats where I wished this or that was only an inch over or whatever. I'm going to learn to sail this thing before I commit to where everything goes.
