Arrows on sails???

So my new to me 37 Cutter has red arrows on all three sails... I've never seen this before. Here's a pic of the staysail and the jib showing the arrows. Is this just to aid in bending them on? It looks weird...

I once hanked the jib on upside down. Labeling the tack does not seem that bad of an idea.

Labeling ALL the corners is a good idea.

I have seen indicators on sails, but near the belly and facing down. (to take picture here).
for sail shape/twist

it might have been UK sails. that or North.

On my previous boat with hank-on headsails, I flaked them out and made little alternating red and green marks along the leech and luff at each fold. Then I could easily single-handedly flake the sail on deck before unbending. Did the same on the main leech to flake it on the boom. Red marks to port, green to stbd, naturally, but now and then I'd reverse it and make the folds a couple inches above or below the marks, trying to avoid creases.

Thanks for all the responses. Wouldn't the arrows have some writing inside of them or the initials if it was a logo?
