Hard to imagine...the accomplishments of around the world solo sailor Ellen MacArthur. A few tidbits: MILES SAILED: 27,348 miles at 15.9 kts LAST 24HR 232.1 miles BEST 24HR: 501.6 miles RECORD 24HR: 540.0 miles Can you imagine AVERAGING 15.9 kts for 71 days? Doing 540 miles in a day? Doing this alone? Three cheers for Dame Ellen!

And this wasn't a 'woman' record! We all need to tremble in her presence. Does anyone know of a link to learn about the systems on that boat? In the old days, a Tri would be lucky to cross an ocean without breaking off an amas. (did I spell that right?)

I've never been able to understand the value of being the first WOMAN to do something that's already been done. If a woman wants to be first at something, be first...not just the first or best woman to do it. Ellen sailed around world faster than ANYone else--male OR female--has ever done it...that's a REAL accomplishment! And sooner or later, someone will beat her record...till then, unless Ellen or another woman does it gain, the guys who come in first will just have to settle for doing it faster than any other man.

In regards to Peggie's post... point well taken :>) The mental focus required to achieve this has to be incredible. I guess I'll get back to my sewing machine and repair some sails while the women take over the world. Dave ;D

On the news they showed the trimar and man the hulls looked like pencils they were so narrow! Does any site have good pics of the boat and all! Whether woman or man, it shows people like this are true explorers and adventurers just like all those who came before! Women must also pave the way, around the world, into space, on to the planets! Im a man but boy I love women!
