Please excuse my naivete but I have only owned a sailboat since this past July.
1) Are these 2 pictures of the same item just from different sides?
I think it is a through hull transducer but am not quite sure. It does not look like what I have seen on the internet.
2) If I disassemble the threaded wire on the inside of the hull, I presume I am not compromising the water tightness? I think that I am just undoing the electrical connection. Any opinions on this?

thanks, Ken

Looks Like ....................

.......... a paddle wheel speed transducer which has so many coats of bottom paint on it, it's time has passed.

Yes, you can remove the wire without a worry of water coming in. However, having said that, somewhere on the boat you should, might, maybe, possibly find the replacement plug for the transducer.

If you can find it, pull out the old transducer, clean up the area around the rubber seal, and insert the replacement plug. That way, you've cleanly done away with the transducer head.

I haven't bothered using our speed transducer for years as in our water, it only takes a month before fine filaments attach to the paddle wheel and renders the whole mess as useless as a rubber crutch.

Before I set out for a cruise, I pull out the speed log from the hull and clean it completly before I set out. I pull the sensor the plug it and do the cleaning. After that I reinstall the log. In my boat we do take on some water mostly only a quart but that is the ticket for better performance of the equipment.
