I noticed in a thread up top that someone caught that I am a homebrewer. I actually make wine from both kits and some attempts at fruit wine.

Anyone else?

I spend my time online discusiing wine at http://www.brews-bros.com/index.php?act=idx

I am like I am here, I do much more lurking and reading than posting, except in the off topic area. I can get a little chaty there.

I brew beer, and hard cider. Mostly from kits, I haven't gotten brave enough to try something I make up yet. Maybe this is the year. I will have o check out the brew bros site.

Homebrewer

I make my own beer and love sailing! I made a 10 gallon all grain system and also grow my own hops. I have also made hard cider, but man that s*** hits me hard! I have 15 gallons sitting in a wood keg in the basement that is going on 4 years old. My favorite beer to brew is a Marzen, which is an Octoberfest lager. Mac

25 years ago I made two batches of beer with a kit. The first batch was so good I had to do the second and throw a party. Nobody died at the party but the second batch just wasn't as good. Beginners luck or lack of quality control I don't know but if the "sin taxes" keep going up I may go back to brewing!

I am getting tempted to brew some beer. I have always done wine but the cool thing is you use almost all the same equipment.

Don't laugh, but one year I invited some friends over and we ran out of store bought beer. "No problem!" says I. So I went to the basement and retrieved my stainless steel 5 gallon fire extingusher and sprayed our a quart or so, which cleared the sediment from the bottom (this was the third and last filtering anyway) and topped of everyones glasses! W e laughed our butts off and the beer was GREAT!!
Go for it...fire extinguishers aren't just for fires you know.

I started homebrewing via kits about 17 years ago. Like to do the lagers the best, although my best so far is a Red Ale. Someday I will try the hard cider route!

Try ginger beer!!!! Make up your mix as usual but before boiling mix in fresh ground ginger. I use a cheese grater. The ginger adds a great flavor especially when drank at room temperature. I have also brewed using molasses and honey.

Albanian moonshine, AKA Raki

This stuff is great in small doses. Cleans cuts, never goes bad, mixes with nothing, is a pure form of a stiff drink. Practical, to the point, no BS great stuff to have on board.

Raki

1) Get Container, filled with grapes, environment for fermentation.

After two weeks, the grapes were ready to be turned into raki. First they were loaded into the still...

...then the still was sealed using a paste made from ash and flour.

2) The still is then heated. Distillation works because alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water. The steam that rises to the top of the sealed still is the result of the alcohol boiling. It has nowhere to go except into the arm that is attached to the top of the still. The steam passes down the arm which is immersed in cold water. The water lowers the temperature inside the arm so that the steam condenses back into liquid.

We wait for the newly made raki to appear...

...which it does as the temperature rises.

After collecting the newly made raki, its strength can be measured.

The still is unsealed...

...and the leftovers...

...go to the garden to fertilise the grapes for next year.
