looks like some kind of weed-wacker. I do no that being air cooled it is going to be loud. Think of a weed wacker revving really high. If it was me I would take the money I was going to spend on one of these and buy a good used outboard. Remember you get what you pay for

I have a weedwhacker OB, a Tanaka 1.75 hp, it is very light and I can lift it in and out of the dink w/o a lot of bother. Also wife and I can still pick up the dink and carry it up the beach w/the motor mounted. Yes it is loud, I just use it to putt-putt a hundred yards from boat to beach or dock. I got it at a garage sale for $10, so didn't put a lot of thought into OB selection.

Ok so I didn't answer the question.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I had an Island Hopper 2.5 for my dingy for a few years. I bought a nissan 2.5 and sold the Island hopper.

The Island Hopper was light, easy to taken on and off, and easy to work on.

The negatives was that it was loud and it will rust.

Look for a used outboard engine for a good price. The island hopper is nice, but I wouldn't do that again.

What a deal - I have a 17' Old Town Tripper Canoe that I am looking to install an outboard motor onto.

I can not find any Suzuki Outboards on Cabela's website, only Nissan and Mercrusier and the cheapest is $850 for the Mercrusier and $930 for the Nissan.

Am I missing something?

All I can tell you is that I bought one of these engines, a 2HP 2 cycle 2 years ago and it has been sent back to the dealer in Florida twice. I must say the dealer promptly responds to any problems, but there is no dealer network so unless you live in the St. Pete FL area, you will have to ship it back anytime you do have a problem. Perhaps the 4 cycle is more reliable, but the 2 cycle is not dependable in my opinion. The 2 cycle does have a "weed eater" type motor and is noisy. As it is "delicate" you can't store it on a pushpit mount, even with a head head cover. It must be stored indoors. The plastic parts, fuel primer bulb and plastic fuel tank suffer from UV damage rather quickly. For the same price, suggest you troll eBay for a used 2.5 HP dingy motor. I have maybe 10 hours on the engine and regret the purchase.

Just for the record, you forgot to mention that you burnt two engines and was hoping to get a third for free, why not tell those nice sailors the rest of the story , you used synthetic oil when it clearly stated you weren't supposed to.
Also, that you had taken your motor to a repair shop in your area and they told you, the engine did not fail because it was defective, it failed because it lacked proper amount of oil to gas ratio.
I know that, because, I called that shop and talked to their mechanic.

I am the service tech you dealt with, and the same tech, that went over your motor and called you with the relatively inexpensive replacement cost of $75.00.
Another point, when I refused to authorize yet another free replacement, you swore to go on every site and talk bad about our product.
I know I have no control over what you write or say, I can only expose the rest of the story.

Our product information does what is says, you bought our motor based on its application and limitations, and it didn't fail because it didn't live up to your expectations, it failed because you BURNT THE MOTOR TWICE in 10 hours.

Little motors

I bought a little Suzuki 2hp 2 stroke for my dink on ebay a couple years ago. Cost like a hundred bucks. It's fairly old, an early 90's model, and ugly as sin. So far it has been totally bullet proof. Is a three or four pull start when been sitting and first pull every time when warmed up. I have found that the only requirement is to run the carb. dry every time I crank it up. The gas we can get these days is just total crap.

Try to find a late 90s or early 2000s viontage 4hp 2 stroke Johnson or Evinrude. It will plane a small rib and only weighs about 33lbs. It has N and F gears and a twist throttle. It also has a tank built in but can run from a remote tank. Great dinghy motor. I picked up mine on ebay and have used it for a couple of seasons. I got a Nissan 8hp with my latest boat purchase. Still trying to decide whether or not to keep the Johnson 4.

I am guessing that you are getting a motor at 2/3 of the price for 10% of the quality.

"Pay now, or pay later".

Personally it looks like you are getting a $125 piece of equipment for $550.
